Abstract
The aim of this study was to test whether moderate alcohol consumption have any positive effect on lowering the blood lipids which eventually supposed to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases among Korean. Subjects were Korean adults 20 years or older (n=5,234) who participated in the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Analysis of variance and analysis of covariance were used to construct univariate and multivariate models relating alcohol to blood lipids for the analysis. As a result, higher alcohol consumption was significantly associated with the higher concentrations of HDL-cholesterol (p£¼0.0001) in both genders. Drinkers, regardless of drinking frequency, had also significantly higher HDL-cholesterol (p£¼0.0001) compared to never-drinker in both genders. Interestingly, serum triglyceride concentrations were also positively associated with the alcohol consumption among men. Drinkers had significantly higher triglyceride (p£¼0.0001) compared to never-drinker. Above findings may suggest that not likely the observations from European and American studies, alcohol consumption, even mild alcohol drinking, may elevate not only HDL-chol, but also TG concentrations in Korean population.
